Review of Big Fish (2003) by Clarise P — 21 Nov 2012
A return to form (finally!) for Tim Burton with a fantastical tale that in part reminded me of the idealized style presented in Edward Scissorhands. A son tries to connect with his tall-tale-spinning father Ed Bloom, and while the actors are engaging deep down there's something inherently faulty with casting Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney as native Alabamans.
Some great visuals, words of wisdom, and memorable sequences - loved Ed's first visit to the idyllic town of Spectre. The reconciliation sections don't work nearly as well as the fantasy and the ending leans a little too heavy of the sappy.
Doesn't reach the same giddy Amelie heights as it aspires, but Big Fish offers plenty to enjoy as its backwater American cousin.
