Review of Big Eyes (2014) by Graham B — 09 Jan 2015

Tim Burton takes on a more subtle tone and delicacy, not seen in him since Ed Wood, as he directs and produces a film about the successful painter Walter Keane, or more importantly his wife Margaret whose work he actually took credit for.

It is a fascinating story focusing on Margaret's struggle to give her artistic integrity away so easily, even with the phenomenal success of her paintings and prints and also the story of her turbulent relationship with her husband.

It is a fine cast. Amy Adams gives quite a performance. It isn't a role that demands grandstanding, rather Adams is simply quietly brilliant as Margaret. Waltz on the other hand blazes out at you gloriously as the con artist extraordinaire Walter.

Tim Burton manages to tell a little known and compelling story with great pace and enthrallment.
