Review of Big Eyes (2014) by Brett H — 12 Jan 2015
A shockingly true story performed brilliantly by Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz in what is easily, Tim Burton's best film in a decade! The very fact that women weren't respected in the arts and thus the two had to create such a scheme is flat-out ridiculous, and eventually the lie became too great to back down from.
The acting is top-notch with Waltz clearly having a ball and Adams' restrained performance was elegant and suitable for the character. There were some shocking moments near the end that took me by surprise and just when you think the story couldn't get more insane, Waltz's character goes completely off the deep end! Tim Burton's low-key directing and the fact that there's no Johnny Depp or his wife anywhere near this is triumphant alone as his work was becoming stale as old bread.
I do not think Krysten Ritter (who was a fabricated character) fit into the time-period and was miscast, but that's a minor complaint in a fascinating story.
