Adams, Waltz, and Burton each seem to be making their own separate movie, all of them "good" but grossly, fatally, out of sync. The result is a film with uneven pacing, a schizophrenic tone, and complete lack of dramatic effect.
Listen, as a die-hard Burton fan, no one is happier to see him make a film outside his comfort zone than I. I just wish the film hadn't made me hope he'd never do so again.
