Review of Big Daddy (1999) by Kelan W — 06 Aug 2011

Adam sandler plays the same character yet again (very close to himself im starting to suspect) an obnoxious, overgrown manchild, shouting maniacly and genrally, at the drop of a hat, having violent childish mood swings meant to be funny be actualy closer to being disturbing, I mean, is he emoitionally disturbed, psychotic even? you have to wonder what we're meant to think of a character who spends the whole fucking movie almost misoginisticly taking the piss out of decent sensible female character (leslie mann) and even giving her shit for coming to his aid in the big smaltzy, bullshit courtoom scene at the end, she is never once made out to be the bad guy yet the film and adam sandlers asshole of a character treat her as such, also the anamosity between the two characters is never wrapped up, and it's really hard to know were we're meant to stand or what we're really meant to think here, but then thinking aint the name of the game in a sandler film, easily the most overpaid, inconsistent and overrated comedic actor in modern film.

I enjoyed this film, I will admit and i'll also admit that I like some of sandlers films (the wedding singer, 50 first dates, funny people) it's simple, silly fun but with a character as morally scetchy (he breaks into a man's house and threatens him in to giving the kid he's brought trick or treating some sweets, then robs him outright, and he puts sticks in the way of skateborders) bullying, loud, and unpleaant as this, big daddy should surely be a far more mean spirited film, the character belongs in a black comedy like bad santa not a family film were he is champoined, it's kinda wrong, yes he learns life lessions but it's all very unconvincing and tacked on.

Im not sure what everone was going on about with this film, it's become somthing of a comedy classic amungst audiences, fucked if I know why.
