Review of Big (1988) by Carolyn G — 28 Nov 2009
One of my all-time favorite movies and the best (I think) Tom Hanks performance ever. This movie is the cinematic manifestation of every kid's wish to be all grown up before their time. The cast is excellent - this is probably Elizabeth Perkins' best work.
Even though we know Josh isn't really 30 years old, the love story with Susan is still so sad when it comes to its inevitable conclusion. When Josh wishes to be a kid again and is walking slowly back home, suit becoming increasingly baggy on him, we're happy for him, yet it is bittersweet.
Just a great, great movie that I've enjoyed viewing with my own 11-year old (who thinks she wants to be all grown up, too). The reason the movie still holds up today is that the desire is timeless.
