Review of Big (1988) by Giovanni C — 27 Apr 2012
I love this movie so much. One of Tom Hank's best works.
The story follows a 13-year old boy name Josh (David Moscow) who wants to be big. After making a wish from a fortunetelling machine. things started to change the next day. He got his wish, but only one problem. Not only he's big, he's an adult (Tom Hanks). Still having a mind and emotion as a 13-year old, he gets into so much misadventure as a big person/adult, regardless of trying to change himself back to who he was before. He also starts to learn what is it like being an Adult.
The story was well-written from beginning to end, and it's something that kids can relate to because I'm pretty sure we all wanted to be big back then. One of those good examples on why we should enjoy being young.
There were a lot of great humor here. Most of them were smart, yet childish, but that's what a PG movie is all about. Eventually, you will get past those fewest childish jokes and like it for what it is. Likewise, it can be heartwarming.
The performance was brilliant here, mostly from Tom Hanks. He can make anything turn into good, even if some of them are bad. He deserved an oscar for this one. Elizabeth Perkins did good with her character as well. They both had a great chemestry here, including him and Jared Rushton.
This movie is great for all ages, not just for kids. Adults will see some nostalgic moments, while looking at this flawless film. This movie will make anyone wishing to be young again and never grow old. Loved it as a kid, and I still do.
