Review of Big (1988) by Eytan D — 17 Jul 2012
What could have been a cheesy B-grade comedy wound up being something far more poignant, heartfelt, and sweet. Big is an A-grade comedy, a classic that combines smart laughs with effective drama. When 13 year old Josh Baskin makes a wish on a fortune-telling machine, he wakes up the next morning a 35 year old man.
With some help from his friend Billy, Josh hits it big with a Manhattan toy company and even gets a girlfriend. Robert Loggia and Elizabeth Perkins are solid supporting cast members, but the movie belongs to Tom Hanks, who is completely believable as a child in a man's body.
It's a dedicated and unforgettable performance. After more than 20 years, Big stands the test of time, and it will always be not just one of my favorite childhood movies, but one of my favorite movies period.
P.S. That keyboard scene still makes me smile.
