Review of Bicentennial Man (1999) by Atanas Y — 10 Apr 2010
Oh man.
Good thing that Asimov is dead and can't see this.
I don't even know where to start to rant.
Really, what would be the worst thing in this movie? The useless and unbelievable romance? The female roboter? The breach of the 3 laws of robotics, after they are explained for the ones new to Asimovs ideas?
Or maybe the total failure to understand and recreate the idea of the original story, trying to make an comedy with wannabe deep meaning instead.
Also notable is the determination but also the obviousity with which this film tries to manipulate the feelings of the viewers - just ugly.
And why all the attempts to make the story more likeable for the masses? If you want big money - go for the smurfs, not for Asimov.
But if you film Asimov - stay true to the spirit, do not go disney on it.
I had some hopes at the beginning and unlike many other reviewers I can't blaim Williams's performance, but this is not Asimov, this is not even a good story and I only warn you all - do not watch this.
