Review of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) by Sam T — 10 Jun 2007
This is my happening man and it FREAKS ME OUT! The best way to describe this film is that it's like watching Josie and the Pussycats on acid. I've shown this Russ Meyer masterpiece to a number of people that always say the same thing - "I loved it, but I'm not sure why.
" Kelly, Pet and Casey, an all girl rock band, talk Kelly's manager Harris to drive them to Los Angelas whwere Kelly has a long lost rich aunt. While there they quickly are seduced by the eccentric Ronnie "Z Man" Barzell and his stable of wierdos and find that fame also comes with a price of drugs, sex and death.
Filmed to perfection by famous skin director Russ Meyer, the film was written by Meyer and, believe it or not, film critic Roger Ebert who push the envelope on how many tasteless and taboo things they can put in this film.
This film has everything: lesbians, nazis, hermaphodites, homosexulaity, alcholoisim, suicide, nudity, parapalegics, murder, rock and roll, porn stars, drugs, road rage and even a musical appearance by sixties one hit wonder the Strawberry Alarmclock (Inncense and Peppermints).
Also contains a great original soundtrack featuring the girls band "the Carrie Nations." A real trippy strange little movie, and one of my all time favorites. You've never seen anything like "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
