Review of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) by Wayne Z — 11 Jan 2009
What starts off a tale about the ups and downs (and ins and outs) of an all female 60''s rock band totally shifts gears in the final real and descends into all out insanity! It is as if they were making it up as they went along (like Denis Ray Steckler did with '(The Adventures of ) Rat Phink & Boo Boo'.
An absolute gem of a soundtrack featuring the awesome vocals of Lynne Carey (aka 'Mama Lion'). This film in particular showcases Russ Meyers fine talents an an editor. The amount of edits per scene in this film will make your head twirl! Personally I found the ending to be just a bit too silly and the tagged on epilogue to be just a tad (well, ok, several tads) too cheesey.
Hard to believe that this was made for a mainstream Hollywood company though. Lord knows what the execs at 20th Century Fox thought when they finally saw the finished article!
