Review of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) by Roland B — 21 Apr 2009
There's really only one reason to watch this movie and that is the eerie life imitates art murder-case of Phil Spector. The movie's climax ends with Z-Man, a recording producer inspired by Spector, going nuts, revealing that He's a she, decapitated a blond hunk, killing a German fat man and putting the gun in the mouth of a woman and pulling the trigger.
The rest of the movie is crap. It's some silly story about a band traveling to Hollywood to make it big. I've never seen a movie in which people just looked at each other so much and poorly overacted.
Maybe that is the joke behind this movie. Maybe I missed something. I just know that if you fall several dozen feet and land on your head, you're not going to bounce back after a week of rehab. Russ Meyer directed this movie and Roger Ebert (the Pulitzer Prize winning movie critic) co-wrote it.
This is obviously one of the biggest practical jokes ever made. If you want to see where Austin Powers got a lot of his mojo, check this movie out. There's even a "Incense and Peppermint" scene and some dialogue quoted verbatim.
