Review of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) by Vincent B — 02 May 2011
Deliriously styled, art directed, shot, scripted and edited... Every aspect is turned up to level 10 for the first half of the film. For the second half it goes over the top to 11...the whole endeavor goes (deliberately) off the rails in every direction. It guarantees that you'll be surprised by the twists, drama and mayhem coming your way.
Out of control and completely off the wall, if you really think about it after watching, you'll wonder how this actually got produced, released and managed to make a profit for 20th Century Fox with an "X" rating in 1970. Especially when John Waters hadn't yet festered (I hope he'd take this as a compliment) into the cinemas yet....
A pioneering work in cult and camp films with no expense spared.
