Review of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) by David H — 03 Oct 2010
Not Russ Meyer's best film, but the man was a born filmmaker with a great eye and unwavering sincerity about his favorite two subjects: boobs. This film is supposed to be a spoof of Hollywood potboilers, but it's also (unintentionally, perhaps) a spoof of Meyer's own sex comedies.
That's a point of fascination with this film, I guess: is it a put-on or does Meyer really mean it? It's in exceptionally bad taste, but that's half the fun. Meyer's Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Vixen and even more highly recommended.
