Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by David D — 25 May 2007
Beyond the Sea is a unique look into the life of Walden Robert Cassotto, otherwise known as Bobby Darin. Half musical, half bio-pic, the film intersects Darin songs into the plot, some as background music while others are sung by Spacey recording or onstage and some are done as if he just broke out in song out on the street.
Spacey, while doing an outstanding job as Darin (despite protests from some that he was too old for the part), not only sings all the songs himself, but also co-wrote and directed the movie. Surprisingly, the show-stealer of Beyond the Sea is not Spacey, but the child actor playing young Bobby Darin, William Ulrich.
This kid is phenomenal, both his singing and acting performances.
