Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by Kim A — 21 Jul 2007
Spacey's labor of love is a huge hit in my opinion. He literally spent years working with a vocal coach to capture the Darin sound, all music is re-recorded from Darin's original charts with a modern jazz orchestra and Spacey singing.
The "Broadway musical" elements of the movie - the three production numbers, the interaction between the child Darin and Spacey as the older Darin, the beginning "backstage drama" surprise which melts into biography and never comes back lend the whole thing an aura of mystery and the fantastic which elevate it above a typical dry biopic and allow Spacey's creativity room to play.
Worth 5 stars for the soundtrack alone.
