Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by May W — 03 Oct 2007
This movie did fine. a great job at directing from spacey and his lead as bobby darin is great, he's exuberant, has an actually fantastic singing voice, this is a project of passion for spacey, he wanted to make this movie for a very long time, heck he even decided to direct his first movie, and it shows.
he's in love with the person and the material, and it comes out on celluloid. it's entertaining and it's an interesting film. kate bosworth is a pretty good choice for the girl of his life, pretty, can make a good angry-wife scene work.
but it all comes down to the singing and musical aspects of the film, because this is in its truest sense a celebration of bobby darin's life and to his music. I really enjoyed the section of the film where it doesn't show his death and he tells the audience its because the film is a celebration of his life.
that was a brave thing to do without having it come off cheesy, but it works.
