Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by Ly K — 01 May 2007
Forget Ray (well, until I've seen it that is!!) or Walk the Line, this is by far the best of the recent influx of musical biopics. A superbly made film on all counts. The film is a musical tour de force, wonderfully old fashioned with some superb dancing numbers.
Bosworth is superb as Sandra Dee, and Goodman in particular stands out as Boom Boom. But the film is about Darin, and both of the people portaying him make the movie. Spacey is simply sensational. In fact I might go as far to say it's his best performance yet and it's a travesty that he was not nominated for either his performance or his direction of the movie which is spot on.
Also, the young guy who plays childhood Darin is superb, the two of them accomodate each other fantastically well, especially in some of the more depressing parts of the movie. A truelly fantastic movie that hopefully will receive more deserved recognition as time goes by.
