Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by Liz G — 28 Aug 2007
Beyond the Sea is a good bio-pic but it's not great. Kevin Spacey does an outstanding job playing Bobby Darin, despite the fact that he is obviously too old for the role I find it obvious that he is a big fan of Darin's and felt no one but him could do him justice.
I don't know if that is true, but Spacey is such a talented actor I won't complain. Kate Bosworth did a very good job playing Sandra Dee and John Goodman was fantastic as usual. I would have to say the movie ran around too much, it didn't seem sure of itself.
It's kind of as if they combined De-Lovely with The Aviator. I also wasn't very fond of the ending, it was really quite cheesy the whole "as long as you're singing you won't die" just doesn't work for me.
But overall it's still a pretty good picture, and worth seeing. 2.5/4 Stars Grade = B-.
