Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by Edie M — 23 Feb 2010
As a lover of old fashioned musicals like Singing in the Rain and An American in Paris, Beyond the Sea brought back a lot of the innocent grandeur that made these films so special. In a way, it was like seeing a Bobby Darin greatest hits album come to life.
I was born the year he died, and I didn't realize just how many of his songs I'd heard before, so I say this as someone who was never an admirer previously, but who now has a greater appreciation for the legend.
However, the movie seemed a bit too lighthearted and shallow to be anything more than a charming piece of Sunday afternoon entertainment. People hear what they see, as Bobby says, and I saw a lot of fluff.
Fortunately for Spacey, it was entertaining fluff. Bobby Darin lives!
