Review of Beyond the Mat (1999) by Tammi S — 24 May 2008
You don't necessarily need to be a wrestling fan to appreciate this film. While, it certainly helps a lot, but chances are if you aren't a wrestling fan, you have your own perceptions of what the business is like.
It might back up some of the stereotypes, but I think the goal of the movie is to humanize, or at least to show that these larger than life characters are real people. It shows a wide range of the stories behind some of these superstars.
I was a wrestling fan when I was a little kid, so it was fun for me to see the behind the scenes access that the director was granted. So even if you're not a wrestling fan, it's interesting to see the lives of some of these really strange and interesting people, and is well worth watching.
