Review of Beyond the Mat (1999) by Jamie M — 06 Dec 2008
In my anticipation to see Mickey Rourke in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, it occurred to me there really aren't any good movies centered on the sport (go ahead and mention No Holds Barred with Hulk Hogan, it's not happening).
Instead I discovered this documentary and Ruth Leitman's Lipstick and Dynamite. In this brutal doc from Barry Blaustein, the cameras go deep into the dark recesses of professional wrestling, particularly the WWE at the height of its popularity.
To see Mick Foley decimated with a chair as his wife and kids look on in the audience is deeply disturbing.
