Review of Beyond the Mat (1999) by Danny C — 12 Sep 2010
Beyond The Mat takes a closer look at the human beings behind the characters in professional wrestling. It follows wrestlers such as Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Mick Foley and Terry Funk inside the ring and out. It depicts the struggles their families go through without their husbands and fathers due to a demanding schedule on the road. It also portrays how dangerous wrestling really is showing various wrestlers with injuries.
Beyond The Mat was a great behind the scenes look at wrestling in the "Attitude Era" and is still poignant today. Wrestling has taken a turn for the absolute worst and Blaustein directed this film right before WWF(E) crashed and burned with corny characters and rediculous story lines. The Attitude Era proved to be the most exciting in wrestling history and this is a small documentary to remember it by.
Although heavily outdated and very partial to the WWF(E), Beyond The Mat provides a great nostalgic feel to the wrestling world of yester-year. It portrays a great story and shows real human raw emotion on camera.
