One of the best films I've seen about the modern music industry, and a pretty effective love story. But what works more is the story of a woman coming to terms with who she really is. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is, once again, absolutely fantastic, and with a great supporting cast, she can do a lot with this role.
Beyond the Lights might be a little too melodramatic in parts, and the dialogue could have been punched up some more. But in general this film works, and will win you over despite any flaws.
