Review of Beyond the Lights (2014) by Trent L — 28 Feb 2015
With solid performances, likable characters and filled with emotional intensity, Beyond the Lights is a stupendous film by all means and a pleasant surprise. Yes, it is cliched and often very predictable, but the movie transcends that with some heartbreaking moments, many truly romantic and warm scenes, some observant commentary on expectations from female singers, Gugu Mbatha-Raw's magnificent performance and characters that have real problems and for whom you genuinely care about and root for.
It is nothing spectacular, but as romantic films go, it is very good and quite satisfying on multiple levels.
