Review of Beyond the Hills (2012) by Al A — 31 Mar 2013
Bit of an odd one. Not quite sure if uber dyke chav is deserving of any sympathy and the situation the convent is placed in seems hopeless. The ending tries to make you question the side you were on, but I'm definitely with the convent still.
The story is interesting, but I'm not convinced Mungiu sells it as successfully as his previous work, though it is as dark.
Very convincing performances from the main roles. I thin Alina's character could have been written a little more sympathetic to begin with. Asides from Mother Superior and Voichita, the nuns are pretty much undistinguishable from each other, but they are inconsequential anyway.
The Priest is the performance that has the most empathy and credibility. He really doesn't to be dealing with this shit! Sterling work from Valeriu Andriuta.
