Review of Beyond the Gates (2016) by Ian B — 12 Mar 2017
Beyond the Gates is the latest in a long line of retro horror films paying homage to the 80's. This one centres around the brief fad of VCR horror board games, as two brothers struggle to save their father who's trapped inside the demonic game.
The film has an interesting premise that unfortunately isn't used to its full potential thanks to some lazy writing and budgetary restraints. Although it takes place in present day, the filmmakers are clearly influenced by all things 80's.
..the synth-heavy score, practical gore effects, video store setting and an extremely lengthy buildup. The director manages to conjure up a few creepy moments, but they're few and far between in this extremely poorly paced film.
As soon as it picks up steam it slows right back down minutes later. One can't help but think a writer/director duo with better imaginations could've done so much more with this concept. Beyond the Gates isn't necessarily a bad film, it's just one that could've been so much better in the right hands.
