Review of Beyond the Clouds (1995) by David R — 05 Nov 2007
Antonioni's lovely final feature, with four stories of thwarted/unconsummated love linked by a photographer/narrator (John Malkovich). Through Malkovich's narration, Antonioni shines a light on his processes, as a filmmaker, storyteller, lover.
The ambiguities of his earlier films are released here in favor of a glorious (if unconsummated) sensuality, which would reign in his films through to his recent death. And the sequence of Malkovich on the beach (guest-directed by Wim Wenders) is just stunning.
