Review of Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) by Pierre T — 07 Jun 2013
The greatest legacy bequeathed by the horror classics of the 80s was an ambiance that is nearly impossible to replicate. The Thing, The Shining, Hellraiser, Videodrome, all possessed a surreal timelessness.
Stories, and terror, particular to, and yet strangely universal, from their place in time. Beyond the Black Rainbow, rather than attempting to capture that same feeling with its script, its performances, or any other superficial surface material, takes the pure, raw ambiance that made the 80s horror scene, and runs with it, producing an undeniably affecting experience.
