Review of Beverly Hills Cop (1984) by Jesse O — 28 Nov 2010
This was a fun movie. The most impressive thing about this movie is that Eddie Murphy hasn't aged ONE bit. He basically looks the same and this movie was made over 25 years ago. That's quite impressive.
But yea this movie is pretty funny, Eddie Murphy was one funny man back in the day. Not to say he's not funny but he essentially plays the same role in all the movies he appears in (with the exception of Dreamgirls) and since this was at the start of his career, I'm sure it was a really fresh and new at the time.
Now not so much. And that's the 'problem' with the movie (not even a problem with the movie itself), times change and this movie really doesn't hold up all as well as you'd think. I mean it's still a funny movie, but it's the sort of movie that would have been awesome if you saw it when it first came out.
And again that's not exactly something the people who made this movie could have planned for. "Let's make a movie that 26 years from now will make people go 'Wow that was on fucking GREAT movie'" You know what I mean? But I mean I still enjoyed myself and I'm actually really looking forward to the 4th movie, because the Axel Foley character is a entertaining character and it would be interesting to see how Axel's character changes.
This is still a good movie and if you can watch it for free then by all means go ahead, I have a feeling most people will enjoy this movie.
