Review of Beverly Hills Cop (1984) by John M — 02 Dec 2013
Don't you miss the days when you actually wanted to see an Eddie Murphy movie? This is about fast talking Detroit cop Axel Foley (Murphy) in Beverly Hills, trying to solve the murder case of a good friend.
Before Eddie Murphy wore out his welcome and started making movies like Meet Dave, A Thousand Words and Tower Heist, he utilized his talents and natural charisma to star in movies you would be excited to see.
This is one of his finest movies, and it is hugely entertaining to see him be a smart-mouth bullshit artist. Everything comes together just nicely: from his memorable laugh to the iconic theme song, from the quality jokes to the seamless transitions from scene to scene, this is an energetic movie that just works.
Foley makes intelligent, yet plausible, decisions that really allow you to believe how this guy can make all the right reads on criminals to be the supercop that he comes across as. It is so much fun to see him in action, and because everything he says is so stream of consciousness, you can't wait to hear what he says next.
This is just likable and enjoyable through and through, and I can't imagine a person not having a blast watching this.
