It is an iconic 80's teen comedy, but when you get past the nostalgic 80-ness of it it is only funny at times. I admit that it is a fun movie and has memorable moments, but it also comes off as clichà (C) or formulaic.
Overall I felt that it could have been much funnier. The movie does has its ups with funny reoccurring jokes (I want my 2 bucks, & the drag racing) and it also has its downs (dancing cheeseburger, and the not so funny dorky parents).
I think what people see in it is that Cusack is enjoyable in the lead role and is a big part about why the movie has been elevated to a supposed "80s classic" but it still could have been so much more.
