Review of Better Off Dead... (1985) by Tom R — 18 Sep 2011
Better Off Dead... is a zany 80's rom com in the vein of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's one of the best movies to watch after a breakup as it deals with partner obsession and suicide in a satirical, but not too dark, manner (it's PG after all).
It has many jokes that hit or miss, but the gags that hit are fun. Your mileage may vary on the humor; it doesn't have a completely coherent plot and there are extraneous scenes that are only there to get a laugh.
There's a claymation sequence featuring two burgers that runs like a music video and John Cusack's younger brother is a mute genius that builds NASA-level technology. What does it have to do with the plot? Not a whole lot.
Is it funny though? Sometimes. Good comedies can get away with this and Better Off Dead... is a pretty good comedy.
