Review of Betrayed (1954) by Rick R — 26 Jul 2010
Betrayed (1954).
This is an early cloak and dagger romantic melodrama about the Dutch Underground and their British-based handlers during World War II. The Netherlands and British countrysides are beautifully photographed in Eastman-color. The action isn't too bad either.
Colonel Pieter Deventer (Clark Gable) influences Holland socialite, Carla Van Oven (Lana Turner) to spy on the Nazis for Britain and Dutch Intelligence. Pieter trains Carla and their bond slowly develops into a love affair. He introduces her to the very gallant, and successful resistance leader (Victor Mature) known only as "The Scarf".
Although a very effective resistance fighter, the Scarf is very flamboyant and is also very affectionate to his mother. Is there some kind of weird gay angle being portrayed here? I don't know, but Victor Mature sort of steals the show here.
Unfortunately, as soon as Carla becomes their liaison, the resistance starts getting caught more and more as if someone is informing the Nazis of their plans. All three characters are under suspicion, but which one could it be?
