Review of Best Worst Movie (2009) by Allen B — 20 Sep 2010
A funny, surprisingly deep, occasionally interesting documentary of sorts about a terrible movie that a lot of people seem to love for some reason. I've never seen Troll 2, and honestly have no intention of ever doing so after watching this film, but it's hard not to become fascinated by the sheer degree of devoted insanity people have for it and its otherwise unknown cast.
The main character of the piece, George Hardy, is charming and charismatic, and it's not difficult to see why he's the one the documentary chooses to primarily focus on. And his daughter is also quite the looker, but that's neither here nor there. The scenes of him at various conventions were hilarious, and as much as he loves all the attention, it's obvious that he's really just a small town guy overwhelmed by it all.
The Italian director of "Troll 2" is also quite the hilarious figure. So arrogant and unflinching in his opinion that he made a great movie, despite all the evidence to the contrary. He even looks the part, with designer glasses and baseball cap and all.
Overall, pretty good film. Though not really about anything important, it's entertaining and funny and explores the nature of the "cult film" in an interesting manner. Worth watching.
