Review of Best Worst Movie (2009) by Chris G — 03 Dec 2010
This is a great picture about the people behind the mother of all weirdo crappy movies. It's also a great examination of the clash between the internet generation and the more traditionally minded (albeit bonehead) people behind the production of the movie. Few things are as painful as watching a 60 year old Italian director explain to people making a film about the unintentional humor in his bad movie that people were laughing at his movie, or to see him boiling with hatred while hipster guys with ironic mustaches guffaw at something he genuinely saw as an accomplishment in craft.
It was really strange to get to know these people I'd be giggling at since I was 13. George Hardy Is as lovable as any documentary "protagonist" I can recall. Robert Ormsley broke my heart just like Uncle Bill from American Movie.
Depressing, yes. Guilt inducing, yes. But the lucky laughs in this film are head and shoulders above anything out there. (except possibly American Movie).
