Review of Best Worst Movie (2009) by Robert F — 23 Dec 2010
A little documentary about a little film made over 20 years ago. At one time, its subject, Troll 2, was listed as the IMDB's "worst movie" of all time (rabid fans have since brought its low score up high enough it currently ranks as the 61st worst). The documentary is big-hearted and earnest; but it isn't anything spectacular as more-and-more documentaries take on much more serious subject matter. This is simply one about a horrible, terrible, gawd-awful film ... that has picked up a cult following. It is directed by one of the stars of Troll 2 as if he is trying to validate himself; and that is where the film suffers the most. I think the doc could have been handled better in some more-neutral hands as this documentarian had some ulterior motives but I am not sure it would have really mattered either. The cast of Troll 2 were relative unknowns and they still are today and some seem to be clinging to this cult following as a second-calling. It is kind of sad but at the same time sincere. Some of these people just want to entertain. Best Worst Movie follows the star(s) of the epic fail across the country from midnight showings to horror conventions and we see their enthusiasm for being remembered while also comtemplating what is truly important. The ending of BWM is what makes the film ultimately rewarding.
If one is up for it -- Troll 2 is bloody awful (people turn into plants and there isn't a single "troll" in the film); but you have to have stomach for crap and camp.
