Review of Best Worst Movie (2009) by Sean C — 27 Aug 2011
Most movies deal with success in one form or another. This one deals with failure, by examining the lives of the actors who were in Troll 2, a universally reviled film that has earned cult status. Therein lays the irony: most of the actors have tried to forget Troll 2, all of them have regrets, and yet the success of the film has made the actors into cult celebrities, thereby giving them success through failure.
It is an odd idea, and something born out of a culture where fame is the pinnacle and yet our culture is seemingly bankrupt. Confronted with the success of Michael Bay, we are left to laugh at Troll 2, where the ineptitude is more forgivable because no one expected anything out of this movie except for some half crazed Italians.
Yet this film never mocks the actors, not even the insane Margo Prey. Rather, we see people deal with the past and strangely triumph over what defines most our lives: failure. That this is done without melodrama is worthy.
I only wish we had seen something with Deborah Reed, and more from Stephenson.
