Review of Best of the Best (1989) by Todd I — 12 Jun 2012
I can't even begin to defend Best of the Best on any sort of sociological level, let alone a filmmaking level. It's not a very good movie. Not really, but what it is is entertaining schlock. There was a period in the late 80's and early 90's where there were tons of movies about kickboxing, karate, martial arts, etc, and a lot of them were straight to video.
Best of the Best wasn't, but many that came after it were (including its sequels). It's filled with bad dialogue, cheesy acting and cliche'd story elements, but you still manage to get involved in it anyway.
I'm not saying it's entirely compelling, but it is a fun watch. It sort of reminds me of Smokey and the Bandit in that way. It's definitely worthy of a rent, granted you can find a copy of it.
