Review of Best in Show (2000) by Jennifer X — 28 Apr 2011
I'm embarrassed to admit that I had never seen this movie before, especially given its all round excellence. The great skill of the directors is to create expectation and excitement about which dog might win whilst allowing us to take a periodic deep breaths and expound hearty guffaws at the owners' expense.
The dogs are cute - especially a North Carolinan bloodhound - and the characters quite ridiculous. Michael Hitchcock and Parker Posey are especially demonic owners - railing bitterly at a passer by when their dog has attempted to make off with his finger and proudly describing how they met at different Starbucks across the street from one another. Every bit as good as the director's earlier Spinal Tap.
