Review of Best in Show (2000) by Zack B — 29 Jan 2011
Continuing the fine 'mockumentary' tradition, a dream-team comedy cast including Spinal Tap's Christopher Guest and Michael McKean along with SCTV's Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, explore the easy-to-satirize world of dog owners and dog shows.
Only the dogs come off with some sense of dignity. Broad caricatures and situations abound, and a lot of gags are hit or miss, but the quirks, foibles and insecurities of the diverse personalities coming together for the Mayflower Dog Show make for some good laughs, if only because they're played so sincerely.
Fred Willard is hysterical and has most of the best lines as a clueless commentator.
