Review of Best F(r)iends: Volume 1 (2017) by Curtis M — 03 Apr 2018
I feel like I just got Rick-Rolled again, as Wiseau and Sestero once again pulled me into the theaters and at once shattered my hopes for one kind of movie and built my hopes up for a very different, cheesy, over-the-top, and yet awesome movie.
The film starts out very artsy and heavy, with two very interesting characters written perfectly for the two actors. Then, about half-way through it's almost as if the director just threw out the script and let Tommy loose, to be his hilariously random and unfiltered self.
The movie at once becomes a comedy, unexpectedly & (much like the Room) needlessly pandering to a goofy and random quality, one that almost feels made up on-the-spot. Then, like the Room, the film jumps the shark and totally goes for camp with strange plot progressions & hints at very strange follow-ups in volume two (yes, you read right.
.. they wrote a 3 hr epic two-parter). It wasn't what I was expecting and I'll wait until volume two comes out to tell you if it is what I ultimately wanted. It's a bit of a shame they didn't use the goodwill of the first half hour to push these two to more legit dramatic performances, but as long as they're having fun the audience might as well, too.
