Review of Bessie (2015) by Ken L — 05 Jun 2015
Covered the bio through most of her primary relationships in her carreer. Gave a good sampling of her biggest hits. Fiesty woman with a short fuse that seemed to stand her in good stead most the time. Had a strong fierce sense of her blackness that sometimes limited her breakout appeal but strengthened her support among the masses her endearing black fans. In the end was loved by a broad audience of white as well as black fans.
Her carreer was plagued by her battle with the bottle which effectively conquered her from time to time bringing her much grief & alienation.
She did little to hide her fondness for other women & carried at least one long term relationship right on through her marriage to another man. Ultimately it was Ma Rainy that stablized & healed her enough to make a successful comeback tour.
Some good & inspirational brushes with racism that heightened respect for her indominable integrity.
Good movie that needed a little more flesh & politics in places.
