Review of Bernie (2012) by Joel H — 26 Oct 2013
It took a long time to see, but I finally got to see it.
Travel back in time to the year of 2012. It's April and trailers and reviews have exploded about this dramedy starring Jack Black. There's award buzz. I can't wait to see it. When is it coming to the UK? to be determined...
Of course, so nearly a year and a half later I finally get to see it, and I was not let down. It is a funny, dark and actually quite moving story. it's the blackest of comedy, and doesn't rely on the dialogue for it's laughs but just the darkness of the situation.
Jack Black really does steal the show here, as he mixes both the comedy, which he excels at, but also has some dark and emotional moments that flow so well in the scene.
It's difficult to give this film a higher rating, as it is a simple story- and a mockumentary, so it isn't a life changing experience. It just does everything right, and just seeing Jack Black perform '76 Trombones' after having just killed Shirley McClaine, had me sold.
It's a small movie, and is based around the characters. But then you forget that this crazy movie is based on real events. And that a lot of this might have happened makes you realize how crazy this world is.
