Review of Bernie (2012) by Matthew D — 07 Jun 2014
There's excellent, gentle direction, and a peculiarly funny script. However, despite all these overwhelmingly good factors, the true marvel of Bernie, a unlikely-killer comedy, is Jack Black's magnetic performance, which provokes in me an entirely unexpected desire - The need to give a big, soft, warm, bear hug to a real-life convicted killer.
In Bernie, there's serious role-reversal... The killer's the victim, and the victim's the cold-blooded antagonist.
