Review of Bernie (2012) by Kshitij R — 15 Nov 2014
The story is in the close-knit conservative town of Carthage, Texas. While the surface is comic (obviously - Jack Black!), the movie cloaks a cynical exploration of how, in the eyes of the law, crime is society's great leveller. Bernie unfolds through chapter headings (viz. "Was it romantic?", "Was he gay?") and then comes McConaughey portraying the district attorney - the only one in town who doubts Bernie for a murder. As the movie goes through the case, what's peculiar is the highlight of aspects that don't make sense over those that do.
In particular, I quite liked a very logical quote from a Carthage townperson: "I know the Bible says Jesus turned water into wine, but it didn't say liquor store wine. It had to have been non-alcoholic wine, because it didn't have time to ferment.".
