Review of Berlin Syndrome (2017) by Jon C — 23 Jul 2017
Teresa Palmer's performance finally showcases her acting ability in something not subpar.
She plays Claire, a photojournalist that has her sights set on exploring Europe to capture buildings.
She then meets Andi during a rooftop party and at first it seems like that ultimate fantasy about meeting someone nice in a foreign land.
As we know though having a one night stand with someone either ends in joy or disaster.
Andi as it turns out wont let Claire go that easily as she finds herself trapped in his apartment for long periods of time and he has the only key, sure she says to him, "I wish I could stay" even if she didn't mean it.
The movie isn't so much about the escape as it is with Claire fighting to get by being trapped by the same guy with nowhere to go.
The length of the movie is a bit long and I would've preferred more scenes of her trying to outsmart him in order to get away.
But the music is effectively dramatic when it needs to be fitting the feeling of isolation and Palmer's performance shines all the way through.
Once again a film like this says be careful when meeting a complete stranger in a foreign land.
Liking someone is one thing, but an obsession is even deadlier.
