Review of Beowulf (2007) by Abby D — 11 Feb 2011
This one's a grower. Neil Gaiman and Roger Avery's script does a fine job of combining the original poems elements to make a more coherent film plot, and the extended version in particular makes for quite a rich piece of fantasy.
Visually the film is of course impressive, with some really imaginative sequences, though only a handful of elaborate shots that justify the performance capture technique Zemeckis seems so intent on using from now on.
Performance-wise everyone does a good enough job, but no one really stands out through the pixels.
