Review of Beowulf (2007) by Nicholas S — 24 Apr 2011
A stunning recreation of the legendary story of Beowulf and his battle with the Ghost Demon 'Grendel'. Found the movie spellbinding. The motion capture was sensational; a good example of just how far digitally enhanced live action has advanced.
Thought parts of the film were a bit grotesque for a 12 rated film really, particularly considering the frequent use of sexual innuendo and the high level of gore. Would have rated it 15 if it was my decision.
If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings and Eragon, think it would be reasonable to say that you will enjoy this movie, in the sense that it's completely farcical, yet seems to be based on pre saxon history.
Having said that that, the duration of the film is 113 mins which is shorter than any of the aforementioned movies and therefore is probably a less heavy going and more manageable option. Probably the best movie i've seen this year.
Would like to watch it again, wearing aviators (3d specs). Whether that would have any effect; I don't actually know. Either way, it would be even more awesome in 3d at the IMAX.
