Review of Beowulf (2007) by Andrew K — 06 Dec 2012
I'd have to call Beowulf a cult favorite. Like most cult films there's lots to nitpick here. The stop motion animation has its issues, the story pacing isn't out of this world, but damned if it isn't a fun ride.
Have a few adult beverages, sit back and enjoy a trippy adventure based on the oldest epic in the English language. The voice cast is superb. Winstone brings Beowulf to life, and Hopkins, Gleeson, and Malkovich are all spot on as well.
It didn't turn a profit on it's $150 million budget, which became a trend in Zemeckis' stop action, but it's kind of a great format for the swords and sorcery genre. It's basically a graphic novel brought to life.
If they could find a way to trim the cost I'd love to see this same style revisited to take on any one of the pulp fantasy or historic-fiction novels littering my bookshelves.
